The International Student Advisor supports the International Student & Scholar Services office and international student population by advising international students and/or scholars regarding immigration, personal and cultural adjustment matters, university processes and policies, and supporting the overall mission of the Office of Global Engagement. This position will report to the Associate Director of Immigration & Policy and serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). The International Student Advisor is responsible for understanding, interpreting, explaining and applying federal immigration regulations pertaining to international students and scholars and for directly updating and maintaining the US government’s SEVIS database of international student and scholar records. The International Student Advisor also has responsibility to coordinate with faculty/staff across campus to ensure immigration compliance, assist with reporting, contribute to strategic goals/projects within ISSS, and assist with one or more of the following specific areas: orientation, programming and student club advising, or J Scholar Program.
Responsibilities
1. Serve as a member of the University of Utah Designated School Official (DSO) and /or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) team.2. Assist with updating and maintaining SEVIS records to preserve university compliance with federal immigration laws and requirements and assign student/scholar benefits.3. Advise international students and scholars regarding immigration, cultural, interpersonal, and/or educational issues, and assist students in identifying and accessing other resources as needed while maintaining sensitivity to people of unique backgrounds and language abilities.4. Assist with developing and communicating office and university policies and procedures pertaining to international students and scholars.5. Conduct outreach to disseminate information on immigration and other international student/scholar related topics on campus by planning and conducting related workshops and seminars for the campus community.6. Contribute to strategic goals/projects within the ISSS office.7. Serve as a member of one or more office teams: web team, orientation team, assessment team, professional development team, sponsored student program team, etc.8. Serve as a liaison for the University of Utah Graduate School to provide support for international graduate students.9. Attend monthly meetings with the University of Utah Graduate School to help support strategic initiatives that support international graduate students.10. Assist with additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus two years’ directly related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
Previous experience in an advising, counseling or teaching environment is preferred. Applicants must be US citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents, per federal regulations for SEVIS Designated School Officials.

Master’s degree in a related field and 2 years experience as a DSO, PDSO, RO or ARO and knowledge of USCIS regulations pertaining to F and J visa holders.

Familiarity with and using SUNAPSIS and People Soft student information systems Ability to interpret and apply complex guidance and regulations related to immigration policy pertaining to F and J visa holders. Communication Skills (public speaking, professional writing/presentations, intercultural) Organizational skills and ability to manage tasks with strict deadlines Ability to collaborate effectively and professionally with colleagues, departments, and offices across campus.
