Job Description

The School of Public Service at Elizabethtown College is seeking an Adjunct in Communications to teach Communications 120: Introduction to Communications. In this course students study communication as a field of study focusing both on human and mediated communication (news, persuasion, entertainment). This course will also expose students to significant media history to inform the current applications of media in society, business and mass communication environments. *This course is required of all Communications majors and minors.

Classes begin Monday, January 13, 2025. The on-campus Com 120 class is currently scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, 12:30-1:50, but there may be opportunity to move the class to a different time slot, depending on student schedules and instructor availability. This will be an in-person teaching position.

Job Duties

Follow a well-developed syllabus (class content, assessment methods, etc.) to foster equity across multiple lecture sections, maintain class standards, and use the Learning Management System (CANVAS) for delivery and management of the course.

Maintain appropriate office hours (on campus and/or virtual) to support students.

Maintain open lines of communication with the Dean of the School of Public Service and communicate if a student or classroom issue(s) arise.

Become familiar with Elizabethtown College academic policies and procedures and meet specified deadlines related to attendance, Academic Progress Surveys, and grade submission.

Provide an active learning environment with emphasis on diversity, inclusion and belonging.

Required Qualifications

Scholarly expertise or professional experience in communications;

Excellent communication skills;

Flexibility and responsiveness to emerging trends in instructional approaches within higher education;

Ability to teach in person;

Applicants must be from one of the following states, due to payroll limitations:
PA, MD, NJ, NY, VT

Preferred Qualifications

M.S. in journalism, communications or cognate field. Those with a Ph.D. are encouraged to apply.

Demonstrated previous teaching success in communications or journalism.

Experience in working with students of culturally diverse backgrounds and/or underprepared students.

Demonstrated success in creating inclusive learning environments.
