Tennessee State University Department of Music invites applications for the position of
Instructor/Assistant Professor – Director of Choral Activities/Vocal Music Education.
This is a 9-month tenure track appointment that begins August 2025. Full-time faculty member serving primarily as the Director of Choral Activities and functions as Vocal Music Education Liaison. The preferred candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses including applied voice instruction, vocal techniques, voice class for non-majors, choral methods and materials, vocal diction, and choral conducting. They will prepare and supervise vocal music education majors for student teaching. They will assist in facilitating on-campus service and community outreach opportunities for local schools. Additionally, the preferred candidate will recruit music students and assist in facilitating the primary operations of the vocal/choral music program. Additional duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will assist in ongoing program assessment, revision, and enhancement, as well as develop and maintain relationships with local and regional K-12 music educators. The successful candidate will also develop choral music curricula, maintain NASM standards for vocal music education, and serve on departmental, college, and university committees.Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Music from an accredited institution.
- 2-3 years of full-time K-12 choral music teaching.
- Evidence of proven success in choral teaching and conducting.
- Outstanding record and/or potential for college teaching including advising and mentoring vocal students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed doctorate (ABD considered) in Choral Conducting, Music Education, or related field. Doctorate is required for promotion to Associate Professor.
- One or more degrees in Choral Conducting or Vocal Music Education.
- Evidence of proven success in choral teaching and conducting at the university level.
- Knowledge of, and experience with, teaching diverse choral literature including repertoire relevant to the Historically Black College University (HBCU) experience.
- Evidence of, or potential for, scholarly activity in choral conducting and/or vocal music education.
- Evidence of acquiring and practicing formal teaching methodologies, classroom management, and rehearsing student ensembles.
- Evidence of current musical performances as well as current educational/musical projects.
- Evidence of collegiality and the ability to work with others in a team setting.
- Ability to accompany choral rehearsals.
- Ability to teach music history, music theory, commercial music, music technology, jazz, and/or general music education.
