Summary
The Department of Liberal Arts at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) is seeking candidates for a tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor position in communication to begin Fall 2025 (start date of January 2025 is possible). We are particularly interested in a communication teacher-scholar with an ability to teach a broad array of communication courses with experience or interest in health and interdisciplinary teaching and research. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive community and strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented groups to apply.

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis (UHSP) particularly values innovation and creativity to support our new health science undergraduate academic programs: Applied Behavioral Sciences, Biopsychology, and Medical Humanities, which are housed in the Department of Liberal Arts. The person who fills this position will also teach students across the health sciences.

The Liberal Arts Department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and currently comprises seven faculty members in the areas of communication, English, history, psychology, and sociology. A list of our faculty and staff can be found here. In addition to the Liberal Arts Department, the College of Arts and Sciences is home to the Basic Sciences Department. The basic sciences house 18 faculty who support seven academic majors (six new). All majors in the college align with an area of health sciences and typically comprise courses from both departments. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Primary responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate communication courses (e.g., healthcare communication, intercultural, organizational); developing additional elective courses as needed; engaging in research leading to publication with the potential for generating grant funding; and contributing service to the department, college, university, profession, and community. Candidates should have an interest and/or ability to teach communication classes such as healthcare communication, intercultural communication, and organizational communication, to name a few. Candidates may have the opportunity to develop new courses related to their area of specialization. The nine-month position is for a 3/3 teaching load (3 classes per semester) for a nine-month contract. The ideal candidate will have an active research agenda in health- or healthcare-related issues and the potential to support student researchers. Opportunities exist for collaboration with current faculty members, as well as potential involvement with the Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (CIPE), a health professions education collaboration among UHSP, Washington University School of Medicine, and Goldfarb School of Nursing. Finally, the ideal candidate should have experience and/or interest in participating on faculty committees and advising students and student organizations.
