The Media and Communications Department at St. Francis College is seeking an individual to serve as the Director of SFC Radio, the student-run online college radio station, for the 2024-2025 academic year and an adjunct instructor to teach COM 3130 Digital Radio Industry (a 3-credit course) in the Spring 2025 semester. The Director position is a 9-month position that runs until June 1, 2025.

The hours for supervising the student run radio station can be determined by the person in the role in coordination with student needs and the chair of the Media and Communication Department but should total 6 hours per week.

JOB OVERVIEW

COM 3130 Digital Radio Industry Course Description
An intermediate course for media production students that introduces them to the art and business of radio broadcasting. COM 3130 offers a contemporary approach to digital radio and podcasting with exploration of radio’s audiences, sponsors, and societal impact.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
By the end of this course, students will:

  • Apply principles on the technical, creative, and businesses practices and processes of radio and podcasting.
  • Practice radio production and podcasting in collaborative groups, from idea conception to scripting and storyboarding, live broadcast and recording, publishing, platform hosting, and promotions.
  • Learn from industry professionals through site tours and/or virtual talks.

Required Qualifications
The adjunct instructor / Director of SFC Radio should have a master’s degree in communication, media, or a related field, experience working for a professional or college radio station, and knowledge of / basic proficiency with radio and podcasting hardware and software.

Responsibilities
The adjunct instructor / interim radio station director position includes the following:

  • Revising and utilizing the course master syllabus.
  • Preparing to teach the course.
  • Posting the syllabus and assignments to Canvas, the College’s learning management system.
  • Organizing one in-person or virtual talk with a professional from a corporate radio or podcasting outlet, in consultation with the Director of Student Media for the Media and

Communication Department.

  • Grading student assignments and examinations in a timely manner and turning in mid-semester and final grades, as instructed by the departmental chair and Registrar.
  • Regular meetings with the full-time staff Director of Student Media and volunteer/work study student leaders to discuss programming, coordinate scheduling, and ensure there are no conflicts with production for the Digital Radio Industry course.
  • Hold workshops outside class time on radio shows and podcast production.
  • Serving as a point-of-contact for setup, troubleshooting, station upkeep, and maintenance.
  • Researching, pricing, budgeting, and writing of proposals and expense reports for gear.
  • Contacting vendors about technical issues prior to scheduling a visit with Frank Scafidi (the station engineer) who addresses major problems, repairs, and equipment setup.
  • Meeting with and supervising students and SFC staff in the writing of internal documentation, training materials for student DJs, and promotional items for events.
  • Serving as a facilitator between student leaders and SFC offices including IT, MarCom, Student

Activities, Development, and Facilities over phone, in-person, on Zoom meetings, and through email for troubleshooting and event planning.

Physical Requirements
The adjunct instructor / interim radio station director should possess the ability to:

  • Teach the class on-campus on designated meeting days.
  • Post assignments, coursework, and grades to Canvas.
  • Hold office hours in-person on campus and virtually on Zoom.
  • Grade assignments and exams.
  • Meet with students on SFC Radio’s E-Board and the Director of Student Media weekly, and as needed, in-person and/or on Zoom, to assist with the station operation and discuss upcoming

SFC Radio initiatives and events.

Adjunct Pay Range: $1,425 per credit- $1,475 per credit (including Stipend*)
The advertised pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to; the candidate’s experience, education, credentials and/or qualifications.

  • Director of SFC Radio role – receive a stipend for $3,000 for 2024-2025 academic year.
